Strong Foundations from Initial DrillingThis ambitious renewable heating initiative is led by Hamburg Energie Geothermie GmbH, a subsidiary of Hamburger Energiewerke GmbH, a utility company dedicated to promoting sustainable energy solutions in Hamburg.The project has been steadily progressing since two deep geothermal wells were successfully drilled in 2022.Production tests conducted in 2023 confirmed the presence of thermal waters at 48 °C at depths of over 1,300 meters—an encouraging result that set the stage for the next phases of development.Following the drilling success, the team focused on building the essential pipeline infrastructure to support the district heating network.The new heat pumps will elevate the geothermal water temperature to between 75–85 °C, making it suitable for direct residential use. With this new system, the heating capacity of the network will increase significantly—from originally supporting 4,700 households to over 6,000.Engineering Excellence in Energy Transition“We want to maximize the use of our geothermal heat.
